The Pension Trap

There's a particular pattern this book aims to address head-on. Every year, people reach retirement age, receive their pension lump sum, and think: "I've always enjoyed homebrewing — why not turn it into a business?" It feels like a wise investment. You're spending money on something you know, something you're passionate about, something tangible you can point to and say "I built that."

The reality is brutally different. The skills that make you a good homebrewer — patience, creativity, a decent palate — are a tiny fraction of what's needed to run a commercial brewery. You also need to be a plumber, an electrician, a salesperson, a delivery driver, a bookkeeper, a marketer, and a diplomat who can navigate licensing authorities, landlords, and suppliers who don't return your calls. Many of these retirees pour their life savings into a dream and lose everything. Not because they brewed bad beer, but because they had no idea what the business actually demands.
